Tuesday was the day that Dave had come for! A guided fly fishing trip on the Snake River. Most of the Snake River was silty due to snow run off, but not the part by the dam. This silt clears up and the fishing gets better over the whole river, but my races were in June, so that is when we had to book the trip.
We were supposed to meet the guide at 8, so we got up early to get a decent breakfast at Nora's Fish Creek Inn. Then we met our guide Chris in downtown Jackson and followed him to the put in spot. His boat was specific for fly fishing on the river. It was big enough for him and two others, and it had no motor so he had to row the whole time. Dave is an experienced fly fisherman so he didn't need to be taught, but I was a total rookie. I think my casting got better as the day went along, but I don't know if others would agree! I only hooked the guide one time! Dave caught two fish and almost a third, but I didn't catch any. It was fun, though, to be out on the boat and see all the scenery.
Our guide rowing the boat
My fishing rod not catching any fish!
The difference between the clear and silty water could be seen at this point in the river
I think the guide was watching to make sure I didn't hook him again!!
The guide told Dave of a spot he should try after our tour was over. We drove almost to Yellowstone to find this spot...stopping at Jackson Lake Lodge to buy sandwiches for lunch...but Dave had no luck there.
So we went back to the dam where Dave had seen a man catch 3 fish earlier that day. He caught at least one fish there while I took a walk around the dam and lake. There were huge swarms of mosquitoes though, so the walk wasn't too long!
The rocks were really pretty, but the picture doesn't show the colors too well
Even if you don't catch fish, the background it magnificent!
One of our antelope sightings!
We finished out fishing day and headed to the Hostel to change for dinner. Both Dave's stepdad and the guide had recommended Gun Barrel and they were both right!! Chris also had told us we had to get the Bison Carpaccio appetizer. This consisted of thinly sliced bison drizzled with dijon mustard and served with smoked gouda and garlic toast. I was ready to get a second serving it was so good!! But we refrained and instead waited for our bison ribs (Dave) and bison ravioli (Amy). All the food was delish!!
This was our last night at the Hostel. Although I would stay there again in a second, I was glad that were headed to a more normal hotel.
The view from the Hostel was spectacular!
Buffalo sculptures like this were around town
Our ride for the week was a Kia Soul
