Arizona fun on race day!

After getting up at 5 in the morning and running the hardest half I have ever run, we then had to have some tourist fun!

Vacation Races has suggestions for activities, and we planned to do their trifecta list.  The first on our list was to swim in Lake Powell.  Not just wade, but swim!  The water was cold (not a huge problem), the bottom of the lake was squishy (too be expected), but what I did not think about, even though it made sense for a beach, was having to walk through sand to the beach!!  Going down was slow walking, especially since their sand is full of rocks, but going back to the parking lot was an uphill walk!  That was not expected or really enjoyed!!  I did enjoy my swim, and Camden had a lot of fun swimming in the lake!!

Lake Powell is in Glen Canyon National Recreational Area

Mom got her feet wet in the lake!

Our second stop in the trifecta was the Glen Canyon Dam.  All we could do was take a picture of it since the dam was closed to tours.

Before we headed to our third stop, we went back to the hotel for me to clean up and then we headed to lunch!!

This restaurant was very yummy!  It was similar to Mexican food at home, but different in some ways.  One way was that they used a cheddar kind cheese in their enchiladas instead of Jack cheese.

One thing we were looking for were Lake Powell t-shirts.  They were not easy to find!  We went to the Glen Canyon Conservancy store beside the Lake Powell Museum, but they didn't have any.  We were able to get a book about John Wesley Powell and some magnets.  But the museum was closed for renovations!  So much for learning about our relative!

This is a replica of the boat Powell used to explore the Colorado River.  It was used in a Disney movie about Powell's expedition, Ten Who Dared.

On the way to our third stop, we took a drive to the Navajo bridge.  On the way we saw and drove through  some incredible rock structures!

The Navajo bridge was built in the 20s, the 1920s, to connect Arizona and Utah.  There is now a newer bridge for cars and the first one is for pedestrians.  There was also some neat engineering in the construction, but my non-engineering mind can't explain!! I can say it was neat to get a closer view of the Colorado River!

The drive to the bridge was about 40 minutes and we figured out that it was right on our Sunday route!  But it was too late to just see the bridge on Sunday!

After the drive to the bridge, we headed to the last stop on the Trifecta, Horseshoe Bend!

It was windy at the bend!

Camden of course had to climb and try to get close to the edge!

There were kayakers and maybe campers around Horseshoe Bend

We left the Bend, starting to get a little tired, but determined to find t-shirts.  We tried Wal-mart, but apparently you can't find everything at Wal-mart!  We finally found a cute little store, Shirts and Shades, and finished our shopping.  Dinner was next on the agenda!  We went to Stromboli's for pasta!  Another yummy dinner!

The last thing to do on our list was to see the dark sky!  We drove to Glen Canyon area again, but missed the turn off in the dark!  We decided to just pull over beside the road and turn off our lights.  It was absolutely one of the most spectacular moments on the trip.  I have seen shooting stars and constellations before, but I don't ever remember seeing the Milky Way.  It was neat to see the difference between the sky when cars were driving by and when we were alone.  All of us just stood outside the car, leaned back and soaked in the beauty of God's creation!  To think, He is interested in the details of millions of stars!!  No pictures were attempted, but the sight will always be in our memories.

One more day of making memories!  And this day involves riding mules!!
